Happy August!

So sorry that I haven’t written in a while..no excuse, just life! Soo my latest focus has been on two things in life rather, three actually. Number 1, read something in the word every morning. Even though my new lifestyle change has been consuming I have to remember God comes first no matter what and that can be hard with the business of life sometimes. Number 2, ridding my life of clutter and things I don’t need. How do you know if you can rid yourself of something? If you haven’t used it or worn in the last year you don’t need it and can live without it. It’s amazing how free it makes you feel when you get down to the things you actually do need and want in life and not all the extras you don’t. I can actually see my closet floor!! Number 3, learn a new recipe every week and use it for my new life of veganism. This has been such an adventure, but it has been worth it. No more bloating, no more acid reflux, more energy. In addition to this change I have quit drinking caffeine which has also helped with all the symptoms above! What a great thing to no be dependent on my next ‘coffee fix’ for my joy. After a couple days of feeling tired I can honestly say I have kicked the habit of coffee and it feels great! Guess I’ll need to change my blog name..;-)

Project 333!

Along with cleaning my arteries with my new vegan lifestyle I’ve decided to clean out my closet and room of all and any junk I don’t used on a regular basis a.k.a minimalism. I’ve been reading the book, “More for Less,” and I am motivated! A portion of the book I really liked was about a lady that wanted to de-stress her life and started a project called Project 333 which includes cleaning out her wardrobe and only wearing 33 items including shoes for 3 months. This excludes workout, sleepwear and underwear. I’m motivated to do this and ready to clean out my life!

The Vegan Venture!

Hey there! If you have been reading my blogs at all you’ll catch on that I love living and living healthy:) This means, mentally, spiritually, emotionally and physically. Recently I had the opportunity to serve as camp nurse at Lake Aurora Christian Camp (as I have for the past 6 years) and was talking to the other nurse who had been faithfully following a vegan diet for a short while after viewing a documentary called, ‘What the Health.’ This video can be found on YouTube and Netflix by the way. It was quite eye opening in the fact that (at the risk of spilling the beans before you watch it) meat is not only bad for your cholesterol, and causes a multitude of diseases we have at an epidemic proportion in the Unites States, but all the companies used as a resource to improve these diseases are actually being endorsed by ‘big meat and dairy’ companies themselves. And the government is of course all up in the mess! Long story short I’m now a practicing vegan and am loving it. Now I just have to get used to cooking and prepping my foods to help ease the transition. Since completely switching over my gastric reflux symptoms have almost completely disappeared and my abdominal bloating has greatly diminished as well! Of course one major symptom of meat and dairy processing is inflammation (which is why we have so much colon cancer and other cancers in this country, do research it’s there). Any Vegans that have helpful hints please comment I need all the help I can get! I’ll post great recipe pics in the weeks coming up:) God bless and stay healthy!

Love the Lemon!

I don’t know about you, but I drink several cups of coffee a day and although it does help with energy at times and tastes great, it contains caffeine, which is not so great for the body. When a person drinks caffeine, that person should drink twice the water to replace that drink. Water flushes out the system and hydrates amongst its many, many benefits. Many people do not like the taste (or lack there of) of water by itself so they tend to avoid drinking or don’t drink enough on a daily basis. If that’s you try putting a lemon slice or orange or even mint leaves in your water to give it flavor. Since I may not always have these things on hand I will add 1-2 drops of lemon, orange, or grapefruit, even peppermint essential oil to my water to spruce it up! This not only makes it tastes better, it adds many more benefits to that glass of water for your body! Here are some of the benefits of drinking lemon water throughout the day:

  1. Aids in digestion and detoxification
  2. Your body receives Vitamin C
  3. Replenishes skin and helps with body healing
  4. Helps shed weight
  5. Boosts energy and mood

Stretching sans Spiritualty

As you all know (if you have been reading my blog posts this month), I have been feeling very convicted (conflicted) about participating in the Yoga practice as I have been on and off for years. This is because, unlike as portrayed in the Western culture, it is not just physical exercise and stretching.’ After many hours of research by both Christians, prior yogis, and even Hindu gurus, it is in fact a spiritual practice.  Even when not intended as such, yoga focuses on body, mind, and spirit. It is not intended to be separate but as one. That is why it is called a practice. Yoga actually means union. When participating in this practice you are not just agreeing to be one with the universe, but one with the spiritual gods that is at its core. The poses are actually used when bringing the person into the right mind consciousness as an act of worship to millions of Hindu gods. So you can see my dilemma when seeing this side of things. In Eastern religion this is normal, but since infiltrating the western society, people have used what they believe is harmless to encompass their whole being. Since I am a professing Christian, I cannot in good conscious facilitate this type of spiritual activity in my home. I wanted to make sure that not only does my family become aware of this, but that I pass on this information to everyone who will listen. Consider yourself enlightened:)

Even though I loved doing Yoga because my body felt great, I cannot condone this practice because it goes against everything my God stands for. This being said I have been looking into other alternatives that would benefit my body in the same way sans the spiritualty. I think I have found it! It’s called Pilates and it was started in the 20th century, so it is not an ancient practice, but a modern form of body strengthening and flexibility. It looks wonderful. I will keep you all posted on the status of this form of exercise. I love to run, but I do need to keep my body flexible and strong to prevent injuries both outside and on the job. I am so excited to get started! Stay tuned..

A Change of Pace for this RN

So this RN has been a bedside nurse for many years, 13 years to be exact. Though it has truly been one of the greatest blessings of my life I hope to explore other loves including writing! Not only have I started a new blog last month to share what I have learned in this life (in all areas of life), but I have decided to write articles for a nursing journal which I am thrilled to do!! For a while this has been of interest to me, but until recently I was unsure as to what topic to share and discuss. If any of you have been writing for a while and especially if you are a nurse that does writing of any kind I invite suggestions. Unspoken rules? Ideas? Thanks ahead of time:))

I have an oil for that!

I was thinking today how lucky I was that I have the benefit of holistic treatment for myself and my family at my fingertips! Because I’m sort of (kidding) into healthy living😉 I know firsthand how determintal chemical based medications and treatment are and the toll it puts on the human body. Working in healthcare I see patients suffering and then suffer more from side effect of their medicines. I wish I could give them an oil! Don’t get me wrong oils are not the answer to all, but naturally treating my family for things like headaches, GI upset, pain and much more is so gratifying.
